SAF BASIC

Beginning Feb. 1, 2026, Alliance Safety Council will phase out the SAF Basic and SAF Basic Refresher courses. These courses were originally developed to provide a remote option for meeting process safety management (PSM) awareness-level prerequisites. 

With the successful implementation of Basic Orientation Plus Remotely Proctored (12VBOP) and Basic Orientation Plus Refresher Remotely Proctored (12VBOPR), the SAF Basic courses are no longer necessary. The Basic Orientation Plus (BOP) series now provides a consistent, remote learning experience through a nationally recognized reciprocal program. 

Transitioning to the BOP remotely proctored courses is in the best interest of contractors because it: 

• Ensures reciprocity — allowing contractors to carry a single, widely accepted credential across multiple owner sites. 
• Reduces redundant training — eliminating the need to take multiple comparable courses when working at different facilities. 
• Provides consistent quality and standards — maintaining alignment with national safety benchmarks established by the reciprocal training network. 
• Maintains remote accessibility — offering a secure, proctored online delivery that supports flexibility and reduces travel requirements.
